UNEXPECTED GRAPES FROM UNEXPECTED PLACES: VENTURA COUNTY

“When the great wine regions of California are enumerated, Ventura is often missing from the list.  It may be because they grow more strawberries than grapes in Ventura County.  They actually grow more strawberries than anything else in Ventura County.  But wine grapes don’t even make the top ten.  Raspberries, celery, lemons, tomatoes, peppers, avocados and cabbage beat out grapes.  Even plants grown for nurseries and cut flowers are in the top ten.  But that doesn’t mean nobody cares about wine in Ventura County.  Far from it.”

“Dottie Kelley can barely contain the note of triumph in her voice.

“I got him,” she said. “I got Adam Tolmach.”

Tolmach is the much-lauded Ojai Vineyard winemaker who, more than 25 years after founding the limited-production winery in a redwood shack on his family’s property in the Ojai Valley, has at last decided to open a tasting room.

Kelley, meanwhile, is the newly named — and first — director of the Ventura County Wine Trail, a guide to wineries, tasting rooms and other wine-friendly sites ranging from the industrial parks of Oxnard to the grapevine-dotted hills of Malibu.”

“WINE TIME: On the heels of Palio di Ventura, its Italian horse race-themed “coming out” party last weekend at Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley, Four Brix Winery will launch its official Ventura County tasting room at noon today at The WineYard, a combination wine shop/wine bar in Thousand Oaks.”

When is the next Four Brix Winery Party?

Fresh off our coming out party, the question we keep getting asked is, “When is the next Four Brix Party?”  Our recent party introducing our first releases to the public sold out in 20 days.  Palio di Ventura was the theme used based upon a popular horse race in Siena.  The feedback has been great on both the party and wines.  We poured a barrel sample of our white Rhone-style wine, named Smitten, along with our first three red wines- Scosso, Zeductive and Rhondezvous.  We have been working on the next party and the only hint we can give you is that it will be a Spanish theme to commemorate the release of our Spanish-style blend, Temptress.  Our wine club members, affectionately called Brix Heads, will be the first to hear about the event, and we assure you it will be different from other wine parties you have attended.

In the meantime, we are pleased to announce the opening of our tasting room at The WineYard in Thousand Oaks.  The tasting room will be part of the Ventura County Wine Trail.  Stacey, Lisa, and Larry will be at The WineYard to help introduce you to our wines.  However, if you would like to meet one of the Four Brix team please shoot us an email and we will make every effort to stop in and meet with you.  We will also be the featured winemaker on May 20.  Stop by and see us.

Our wines are now available on-line at our web site under STORE, and also at The WineYard.  If you would like to stay in touch, please sign up on the web site under CAN NOT GET ENOUGH?!.  Of course we enjoy hearing from you on Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks once again for everyone who has supported us in so many ways.

Cheers, Four Brix Winery

Briley: Four Brix Winery is new in town

“In an unimposing Simi Valley neighborhood, about a dozen families have been involved in home winemaking for many years. Three of these families recently decided to step beyond the hobby aspect of wine-making to found Four Brix Winery.  On May 20, the Simons-gaard, Stewart, and Noonan families will open the Four Brix Winery tasting room in Thousand Oaks. It will be inside the popular WineYard wine bar, next to the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.”
